MFA Dance Concert, “Attention on Me.”

Florida State University’s School of Dance is proudly presenting the second MFA concert of the season this February. MFA candidates Kieron Sargeant and Yayun Li will present a dance performance, Attention on Me, in partial fulfillment of the Master of Fine Arts Degree in Dance. This MFA concert offers performances that hope to give weight to sensory experiences in mind, body and soul, and the candidates contribute a unique perspective on what’s known and unknown of dance by approaching these contemporary, modern works with versatility.

Yayun Li’s work “May I Have Your Attention” describes different methods of drawing dancers and audiences’ attention during the dance performance on stage. Using the five senses, Li explores the choreographic movement itself. “It’s a process of how to use sight, sound, touch, smell, and taste to draw people’s attention on and off stage,” explains Li. Li’s intention is for dancers to be more present and focused on how their minds and bodies react while the audience’s attention shifts.

Kieron Sargeant’s “Mystical Consciousness” carries the audience into a journey of pilgrimage through different states of his spiritual travels. Based on the Spiritual Baptist Faith of Trinidad and Tobago, Sargeant introduces Mourning, a ritual that worshipers take for reasons ranging from healing to understanding one’s purpose in life. Sargeant weaves contemporary modern movement with folk dances of Trinidad and Tobago to depict the journey through Mourning.

Admission is free and all seating is general admission.
