DIRECTO's 2nd Annual Symposium

Friday, September 27, 2019

9:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. at the FSU Turnbull Conference Center

DIRECTO FlyerJoin Dean Frazier at DIRECTO’s 2nd Annual University-Wide Symposium on Diversity & Inclusion in Research & Teaching, and Book Club! The symposium will take place on Friday, September 27th, 2019, and the book club will occur the following four Fridays, to “continue the conversation.” These events are sponsored by the FSU’s President’s Council on Diversity and Inclusion, The Office of the Provost & Vice President for Academic Affairs, The Division of Student Affairs, The Graduate School, the College of Business, and The Congress of Graduate Students (COGS).

Symposium Goal

We hope this event will create a “safe-space” for individuals and groups within the FSU community to discuss issues surrounding diversity, inclusion, and equality. More importantly, we want attendees and participants to walk away from the event with tangible ways to incorporate diversity and inclusion in their research projects and teaching methods.

Event Details

The Symposium Welcome will be given by President John Thrasher. Keynote speakers are Dr. Pamela McCauley, and Dr. James Frazier (see more information on DIRECTO’s website), and breakout and poster sessions will be facilitated by faculty, staff, students, and postdocs from FSU, TCC, FAMU, Valdosta State, and Auburn. In addition to the symposium, there will be an accompanying book group based on Transforming Understandings of Diversity in Higher Education: Demography, Democracy, and Discourse. This book will lend itself to discussion of how particular topics in diversity and inclusion (race, gender, disability/ability, etc.) can and should be best approached when we teach and present our research.

Book Club Information

This book club will provide an opportunity to “continue the conversations” started at the Symposium. Participants of the book club and symposium are welcome from all areas of the university: faculty, staff, undergraduate students, graduate students & alumni!

The first 25 people who sign up to attend all 4 book club meetings, AND the 2nd Annual Symposium on Diversity & Inclusion in Research & Teaching will receive a free copy of this book!
