
Tom Welsh
Professor
School of Dance
Tom Welsh has been on the FSU Dance faculty since 1991. He teaches Dance Conditioning, Pilates for Dancers, Dance Kinesiology, Science of Dance Training, Research in the Dance Sciences, and Dancer Coaching. Tom earned a PhD in behavioral studies while conducting empirical research at the University of Kansas, a master’s degree in dance kinesiology and education while performing at the University of Utah, and a bachelor’s degree in psychology while competing in inter-collegiate gymnastics at Western Michigan University. He conducts research on healthy approaches to training dancers and he built the still unique FSU Dance Conditioning Studio with help from dancers, faculty, and staff. He is author of Conditioning for Dancers and he publishes research in international journals. Dr. Welsh is a member of the editorial board for the Journal of Dance Medicine & Science and a member of IADMS Research Committee (International Association for Dance Medicine & Science). He served 6 years as IADMS President-elect, President, and Past-president, His experience as a researcher, teacher, and program builder inform his approach to helping dancers stay healthy while performing at peak levels.
