Mentorship & Artist Support
In recognition of its important role within the national arts ecology, MANCC provides mentorship in a variety of ways, to students, artists, and within the larger field.
“I wanted to be able to teach, create, and learn from conversation simultaneously, rather than choreograph in isolation. I believe in technology as an important part of disability culture and of disability dance culture. …MANCC contributed to so much of the creative process – not just the choreography of dancers.”
– Alice Sheppard (NY), 2017
MANCC, housed within the Florida State University School of Dance, offers students a wealth of opportunities beyond traditional coursework. Through informal showings, discussions, forums, and in-studio experiences, MANCC fosters career development, scholarly connections, and even post-graduation employment. The School even boasts a unique MANCC class that delves into the creative process of visiting artists, allowing students to observe rehearsals and attend final showings while engaging in scholarly research about the artists. Additionally, MANCC offers a hands-on internship program each semester, where 4-5 students gain invaluable experience working alongside professional artists. Intern duties range from research and production assistance to documentation, and even potentially serving as standby dancers, providing a well-rounded understanding of professional dance production.
