MAGIC OF METAMORPHOSIS: A Journey Through Liminality

Published March 24, 2021

On Friday, March 26, 2021 at 6:00 pm, MFA candidate Annali Rose presents her latest work, Magic of Metamorphosis: A Journey through Liminality virtually in a three-part feature.

In this presentation, three short vignettes feature the themes within metamorphosis: time, transition, and regeneration. Liminality, the underwater dance film, created in collaboration with Jennifer Akalina Petuch, opens the three-part journey. Liminality explores suspended time and the alternate reality of the space between life and death as the heroine finds her strength and a new direction. Second, is the working draft of an illustrated children’s book, Iris the Ballerina Caterpillar, a whimsical story capturing the parallel transitions that face the life of a ballet dancer and caterpillar alike. The trilogy ends with the dance film, Unraveling into Awakening, a journey of rebirth. As an outer reality is casting away, a seed of inner potential is germinating in preparation to burst through and take flight on a new adventure of personal discovery.

These works are the culmination of research undertaken by Annali Rose, an MFA candidate in Florida State University’s College of Fine Arts’ School of Dance. Inspired by her experience transitioning out of an extensive professional ballet career, her focus of study has revolved around investigating the relationship between play and creativity. Her embodied research used her childhood play history as a guide to cultivating an honest expression of her artistic voice in new ways. During her time at FSU, she has explored the intersection of multiple artistic mediums including dance, costume design and production, creative writing, illustration, and videography.

Ms. Rose had the privilege of enjoying a professional ballet career that spanned eighteen years across multiple companies and with a variety of choreographers, artists, and ranges of aesthetic from classical and neo-classical ballet to contemporary ballet and modern. Companies she danced for include Sacramento Ballet, Trey McIntyre Project, Ballet San Jose Silicon Valley and Amy Seiwert’s Imagery. While dancing for these companies, she had the opportunity to perform the work of esteemed choreographers including George Balanchine, Sidra Bell, Marc Brew, Val Caniparoli, Ron Cunningham, Jorma Elo, Jessica Lang, Trey McIntyre, Ohad Naharin, Amy Seiwert, Glen Tetley, Twyla Tharp, and Septime Webre. Augmenting her work and passion as a dancer, Ms. Rose is a movement educator holding multiple professional certifications. She is a fully certified STOTT PILATES® instructor, a STOTT PILATES® Instructor Trainer in Mat and Reformer, and a Level One Certified GYROKINESIS® and GYROTONIC® Instructor.
