Tyrone Brooks has an extensive background as a principal dancer and teacher. Beginning in 1979 he was a principal dancer with the Dance Theatre of Harlem for 18 years. He continued his association with the Dance Theatre of Harlem School following that by serving as part of the full-time faculty and associate director of the Dancing Through Barriers Ensemble for seven more years. During these years with DTH, Tyrone also served as a Teaching Artist in the New York City Public School System. Following the years with DTH, Tyrone served as Director of Community Dance for the Virginia School of the Arts in Lynchburg, Virginia, before becoming Executive Director of the School for five years. Immediately following that, he joined the FSU School of Dance as Guest Artist, and he has continued to do free-lance teaching in a variety of communities. This past year he served as Director of Education at the New Orleans Ballet Association and this summer he is teaching for the Dance Theatre of Harlem Summer Workshop at the Detroit Opera House in Detroit, MI. Tyrone also served as guest artist for the School of Dance for the Spring 2010 term and the Summer 2011 Summer Dance Intensive. He will serve as an FSU School of Dance Visiting Professor in Fall 2014.
