MFA Concert: Hall & Mitchell

On January 30 & 31, 2015 at 8pm, MFA Candidates Afua Hall and Ronderrick Mitchell will inaugurate the first round of 2014–2015 MFA thesis concerts with their shared evening of dance titled An Enactment: Assumptions, Rebuttals & Reconciliations. With roots extending from Miami and Jamaica, Mitchell and Hall have joined together to present their choreographic works. The pairing of Mitchell and Hall’s work is an ideal juxtaposition; both choreographers are reflecting on their responsibilities as citizens and artists while recuperating socio-political and aesthetic approaches.
Mitchell’s Sweet Tea is a powerful and celebratory Dance Theater work that confronts and transforms the homophobia that many LGBT persons are faced with in Tallahassee and elsewhere. Inspired by the research of E. Patrick Johnson and personal narratives garnered from the cast, Sweet Tea fuses Contemporary Dance, Spoken Word, and an eclectic sound score to create an opportunity for the personal and communal transcendence of fear and anger. The work also features a new solo by Bessie award winning choreographer and Tallahassee native Darrell Jones.
Hall shares three dances titled The Write Off; The Good, The Bad, The Third Position; and a special performance of Jawole Zollar/Urban Bush Women’s Batty Moves. All three works are distinct in their movement vocabulary and theme while being rooted in a sense of provocative play and thoughtful introspection. Hall’s process involves the layering of personal experiences with general observations to create humorous and dramatic non-linear narratives that playfully interrogate the role and expectations of the traditional, out-dated dancer stereotype and her relationships to self, fellow dancer and audience. The shared evening of choreography and performance features a diverse cast and promises a visually stimulating and thought-provoking experience. Featured are a stellar and diverse cast of dancers hailing from the FSU Schools of Dance and Theatre, the general student body, and Tallahassee Community College.
