Some 25 years ago, at the 25th Anniversary Celebration of Nancy Smith Fichter’s tenure as Chairperson of the Department of Dance, a scholarship campaign was funded by alumni to honor Nancy at that special moment. This project was the brainchild of adjunct faculty member Sharyn Heiland Shields (MM 1968) and production manager Odette Salvaggio.
Soon the fund became large enough to be endowed, and its proceeds have been used to award a scholarship to a special and deserving dance major about once every two years. The principal amount of this fund has not changed much over the past 25 years, and we thought that it would be fitting on this 50th year of degree programs in dance, to put a challenge out there to alumni again to contribute to this endowed scholarship fund so that it can grow and be offered to students on a more regular basis.
