FSU Dance Department Faculty, Alum And Guest Artists Honored With Prestigious BESSIE Award.
On Sunday, September 17, Jawole Willa Jo Zollar, founder and director of Urban Bush Women, Florida State University professor and 1997 FSU “Grad Made Good” received her second BESSIE award!  The Bessie, established in 1983, honors outstanding and innovative achievements in dance and related performance.   Zollar won for her work “Walking with Pearl . . . Southern Diaries”, which was first developed at the Maggie Allesee National Center for Choreography (MANCC) housed in the Dance Department here at FSU.

Other award winners from the evening’s ceremonies include choreographer Bebe Miller and her creative team for their recent work “Landing/Place”.   Dancer and FSU alumnus Daryl Jones (MFA 1995) was recognized as a part of that creative team.  Last year’s MANCC guest artist Yasuko Yokoshi received a choreographic award for her work, “what we when we” which she finished here at FSU last December.

Additionally, 05 department guest artist and Seven Days performer Susan Marshall, and upcoming MANCC 06 guest artist Miguel Gutierrez won for their achievements in choreography.

Quote from Dean Sally McRorie “We are extremely proud of Jawole and the entire dance department for their recognition through these awards.  The BESSIES are considered the Tony Awards of the dance world.  The recognition of faculty, alumni and guest artists through this year's awards reflects the caliber of work we are developing here at Florida State University.”
