Friends of Dance celebrates 20 years
fodsmall.jpgFriends of Dance, the partnering organization for the Florida State University Department of Dance, announces its 20th anniversary.
Founded in the fall of 1987, the organization has offered continuous support to the Department, primarily through scholarships.

During it history, Friends of Dance has granted over 450 scholarships totaling more than $150,000 in scholarship funds. These funds have helped students offset the cost for tuition, books, summer study, housing and attendance to national conferences and festivals. Prior scholarship recipients have taken roles as faculty at colleges, arts administrators, professional dancers, pilates trainers, studio owners and dance instructors.

Friends of Dance also supports the education of young community dancers by hosting the annual Workshop for Young Dancers. This two day workshop, aimed at those under the age of 18, provides an intensive weekend of classes in dance including ballet, modern, choreography and dance technology and has featured FSU Eppes Scholar Suzanne Farrell since 2002. Other outstanding faculty have included Lynda Davis, Anne Campbell-Crawford, Tim Glenn, Sheila Humphreys and Gerri Houlihan. The 2007 Workshop was host to 90 dancers from five states.

Friends of Dance is governed by a Board of Directors comprised of a dedicated group of community volunteers and dance enthusiasts and supported by the generous gifts of members.

The mission of the Department of Dance is to combine exceptional artistic training with a liberal arts education. This dual dedication to art and learning has yielded graduates who are dancers, teachers, scholars, and leaders in companies, schools universities, and art organizations in the United States and abroad. In addition to classes for dance majors, approximately 350 students are instructed each semester through the general studies in dance classes open to community dancers.
